    Ibiza by Amelia Mather

    • Creative Director & Designer, Amelia Mather shares her guide to Ibiza.

With an old town dating back to the Phoenicians, once a maritime hub for trading salt, to the 60’s when hippies camped out in caves - Ibiza’s colourful history makes for an intriguing energy - a push and pull that draws you back time and time again.

Known for its hedonistic party scene, the island’s spiritual resonance warrants equal exploration. Beyond the super-clubs and beach foam parties, Ibiza is so much more. Discover ancient forts, centuries-old fincas, yoga retreats and traditional rituals. Savour produce from organic cafés, farms and the iconic Iberico jamón. All brought together by the incredibly warm and eclectic Los Ibicencos (Ibizan natives).

      Los Enamorados

Owned by French Pierre and his Dutch wife Roze, this converted retro-bohemian hotel is a maximalist’s dream. Moreish, worldly-inspired food is served on mix-match linens and ceramics. Colourful, market-style decor is sourced from all over the world and topped off with a view of crystal clear water, synonymous with the north of Ibiza.

      La Granja

The Ibizan countryside is full of old ‘Fincas’, or farmhouses, featuring rustic stonework, archways and plenty of exposed timber. La Granja is a tranquil conversion with its rendered walls, stone-washed linens in earthy shades, and some of the most delicious, organic ‘slow food’ on offer thanks to their resident ‘Master Farmer’ who works sustainably with the mineral-rich land. Don’t miss the infamous weekly rituals hosted here.

      Can Viky Airbnb

Ideal for groups, Can Viky in Santa Eulària is the newly renovated home of Spanish interior designer Virginia Nieto and her influencer daughter, Monica Anoz. Having graced the pages of Spanish Vogue, their Villa respects traditional Spanish architecture and is decorated with an array of cultural antiques sourced from their travels.

    • EAT

      La Paloma, San Lorenzo

Lunch, dinner or both – experience home-cooked, organic meals in this family-run eatery in the village of San Lorenzo. Like most restaurants in Ibiza, La Paloma also houses a cute little shop with printed voile dresses and embroidered smocks.

      — The Fish Shack, Talamanca

It’s nothing fancy, just a shack on the rocks at the end of Talamanca beach serving the freshest fish. The Dorada fish is a must try. Mid-meal swims are acceptable.

      — El Bigotes, Cala Mastella

A local’s secret, tucked away on a private cove. The only tavern on this quaint beach, be sure to book ahead for a long lunch as the regulars do.

    • DO

      — Mercado

San Juan, the furthest town towards the north has become a great little gathering spot. Eat at the Giri café and wander the Sunday market.

      — Ritual

Every Sunday during summer you can watch the sun slip into the ocean to the sound of drums at Benirrás. A ritual that has been performed since the island’s inhabitants were protesting the Gulf war in the early 90s.

      — Connect with the earth

Terra Masia is the largest organic farm on the island. Food lovers will appreciate the on-site market where the freshest produce can be purchased.

      — Reflect

To balance out an otherwise indulgent holiday, take a yoga retreat for a couple of days to re-energise and find your zen. I recommend Ibiza Retreats - a week of daily yoga practice, morning and night, plant-based, clean eating with lots of ginger and lemon tea for detoxification. In addition, massages and experiential sessions of kundalini, reiki, interpretive dance and meditation make for an unforgettable experience.
